The TLC vision was to develop a collaborative approach to improving instruction that would bring together classroom teachers, teacher educators, and other experts who all have relevant knowledge and skills related to teaching English learners.
The TLC project had three target groups and one common goal: To improve instruction of English learners.
English learners constitute the majority of students in our local district where our teacher education candidates are most likely to work. All of us engaged in supporting English learners need to examine how teacher education candidates are prepared to teach English learners and if classroom teachers are given sufficient professional development to work effectively with these students. We see this as a social justice issue that everyone invested in public education needs to address.
The TLC project for K-8 teachers began as Antioch faculty kept coming back to the gap that exists between the research and theory commonly accepted and taught in university teacher education programs and the day-to-day experiences of classroom teachers.
